Ukraine – Killing Surrendering Soldiers, Shelling Civilians

Source: Moon of Alabama.

It appears that things are getting ugly in Ukraine with (according to Russia) Ukrainian forces murdering their own troops who attempt to surrender and Ukrainian artillery brazenly shelling civilian targets.

The United States will have little to be proud of when the full story of our support for this war is told. If Joe Biden were a competent president, he’d be actively engaged in bringing this conflict to an end.

But Biden is not competent. He doesn’t even notice that he is backing the bad guys.

The Bulwark: If Trump Wasn’t Lying, That’s Worse

“A delusional president is far more dangerous than a mendacious one.”

Will Saletan presents 5 exhibits from yesterday’s hearing with the conclusion that if TFG truly believed the lies he and his minions were presenting to the American people, he is delusional and not fit for office.

His close is something that all should consider.

Detached from realityLost contactNo interest in facts.

We can’t have a president who thinks—or doesn’t think—this way. We can’t put the world’s most powerful armed forces and nuclear arsenal back in the hands of a man who believes, no matter what, that he has the mandate of the people—and is willing to use violence to stay in power. In the Oval Office, a madman is far more dangerous than a liar.” (Emphasis added.)

Based on the opening paragraphs, a historical recollection of Nixon and his actions, perhaps DJT learned a lesson about ADMITTING he is lying.

Day Two – The Big Lie

The presentation by the Select Committee today focused on the Big Lie – The claim that the election was stolen from Donald Trump through massive election fraud. Using testimony from people appointed by Trump they established beyond a reasonable doubt that:

  1. There was no fraud of any significance in ANY of the states that Trump accused of stealing the election from him. Or anywhere else.
  2. Everyone around Trump KNEW that this was the truth of the matter and told him so beginning on election night where only an inebriated Rudy Giuliani gave him the advice he took – claim a victory that was not in the cards and start with his fraud accusations.
  3. Donald Trump was told over and over and over again that his claims were false and even after such briefings by his staff, his campaign, and the DOJ he IMMEDIATELY repeated them again for public consumption as if they were God’s truth.

When considering a criminal case, the greatest hurdle is often to prove criminal intent. Nobody really knows what is in another person’s mind. A possible Trump defense in a criminal conspiracy trial might be a claim that he really did believe the Big Lie. The evidence presented today makes that impossible to believe unless he is truly insane – “detached from reality” in AG Barr’s words.

One side topic at the end of the session covered Trump’s fundraising off the Big Lie. He raised more than $250 million supposedly for legal fights to “Stop the Steal.” The bulk of it was transferred to a PAC controlled by Trump and never used for the advertised purpose. The Big Lie became the Big Rip-Off. Classic Donald Trump grifting. Suckers!

Still have heard only one cricket

I’m surprised only one person has suggested a candidate for 2024 in case Trump doesn’t run. So far, there is only one “cautionary” vote for DeSantis. Is nobody considering Youngkin? If not, why not. He has supported the Big Lie, but he has done it quietly enough to have kept out of the fray. He’s new enough that he doesn’t come with a lot of the baggage a candidate like Cruz or Christie might have. Why not Glenn?

Possible Senate Compromise on School safety

FOX Framework for firearms legislation

If Democrats don’t sabotage it in the details, a compromise might happen.

The Elements are:

Increased mental health services for young people.

Improvements in school security

Enhanced penalties and enforcement on straw purchases.

Incentives for State Red Flag laws.

Including Juvenile records in NICS scans for those between 18 and 21.

In general, these aren’t bad.

Inspiration for mass shooters?

Bill Maher on Hollywood’s share of responsibility

Bill Maher is hardly a 2nd Amendment advocate, and neither he nor I advocate censorship, but Maher does a good job of exposing the hypocrisy of the Hollywood left.

My gripe with TV and Movie violence is the lack of consequences. I remember an early John Wayne movie, “Red River” or maybe “Stagecoach” in which the Duke, after trying to avoid confrontation, has to shoot and kill a bad guy. The guy’s mother literally runs out into the street and cries over the body. You don’t see that in today’s movies.

When the good guy gets wounded, he walks it off, and in next week’s bedroom scene, there’s not even a scar. It’s almost like video games where when you get killed you just put in another quarter. No consequences.
