What is a Church?

According to the IRS, apparently the Family Research Council is. Regardless of what political actions some of their “offshoots” perform.

It seems to be a dodge to protect the identity of donors and just another way around laws that are supposed to keep dark money out of politics. But as we know, dark money is like water; it finds a way to get where it wants (BOTH parties, by the way).

If you want to know why

Biden voids compromise on firearms

If you want to know why it is hard to find compromise on firearms, here you go.

After Republican Senators and Congressmen stick their necks out to support a compromise on gun laws, and with the ink not dry on his signature, Biden calls for ignoring the compromise to try to get everything the hoplophobes want.

Every compromise is just the starting point for more demands.

Well, I guess those 15 Congressmen and 10 Senators have learned their lesson now. They will never compromise again. Democrats simply do not bargain in good faith.

West’s Ukraine Strategy Will Mean a Prolonged, Bloody Stalemate

Source: The Wall Street Journal.

The writer, to my mind, makes a number of mistakes, but we can cull a few useful observations:

  • “The likely result [of continuing to arm Ukraine] will be a prolonged and bloody stalemate reminiscent of the Western Front of 1915.”

In other words, stalemate is the most Ukraine can hope to achieve.

SCOTUS has been lobbied by the right for years.

https://www.politico.com/news/2022/07/08/religious-right-supreme-court-00044739

“Rob Schenck, an evangelical minister who headed the Faith and Action group headquartered near the Supreme Court from 1995 to 2018, said he arranged over the years for about 20 couples to fly to Washington to visit with and entertain Supreme Court Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito and the late Antonin Scalia.”

Can we lobby judges that we know will hear our cases in future decisions? Evidently so. If there has been much doubt about whether the Court is above the political arena, it has been erased, in my opinion. Who needs to win elections if you have the judges in your pockets. Reminiscent of Vito Corleone in “The Godfather”.

Of Course the States May Prohibit Abortion Drugs

Source: National Review.

Like the writer, I see no reason why states can’t prohibit abortion drugs if they choose. It seems to me, however, that abortion drug bans raise practical issues that abortion bans do not.

For example, do all the same arguments against alcohol and narcotic prohibition apply? Or, assuming a state makes abortions illegal, does that automatically make the use of abortion drugs illegal? Or, what penalties might a woman who uses an illegal abortion drug face?

These and other issues are bound to become topics of discussion in the near future.

Yet another Trump crime?

Signs point to – Yes!

For some reason, yet to be determined by the IRS Inspector General, BOTH James Comey and Andrew McCabe – FBI Directors who were not loyal to Trump – were selected for very rare and very intensive IRS audits that are supposed to be done at random. A little back of the envelope math based on IRS data about these audits says that the chances of this happening by chance are beyond miniscule – precisely 0.00000017% or about 1 out of 590 million.

The basis for today’s populist conservatism.

“To really understand the GOP’s hard-right turn, look to L. Brent Bozell Jr.”

An interesting look at how we got where we are today with “conservatism”.

Often times, we on this forum have pointed to certain times and individuals who have started the downward spiral of the modern GOP and ideas embraced by today’s “conservatives”. Newt Gingrich gets a lot of props due to the “Contract with America” when he was Speaker.

This well written piece goes back even further and explains who and how we got where we are today.
