In many kingdoms of the ancient world, taxes were a type of rent. The king owned all the land and everything in it. Subjects paid taxes to use the land and its resources. The king, in turn, raised an army to protect his subjects and invested in public works. It was a simple formula, but one sufficient to sustain a basic legal system and a generally free market for exchange.

There is no good reason to disenfranchise almost 3/4’s of a million Americans because of where they live. The Dakota Territory was split in two to give Republicans two extra seats. Several other Western states were admitted to bolster GOP power.
While we are at it, let’s bring in Puerto Rico which has more Americans than 20 states. The upside is that Mississippi would not be the lowest per capita income state. A bragging point perhaps.

This is a critique of the memoir. Some of you may find this interesting, if not a little off-putting. I think it succinctly illustrates the left-of-center criticism of his administration, and his hubris.
