The Witch of Oahu

One of the Forum regulars warns that Tulsi Gabbard is a member of a religious cult. Looking at the “cult’s” web site (linked above) I find little to be concerned about.

Hinduism is one of the world’s great religions. On that basis alone it is unrealistic to describe Hindus as members of a cult. On the contrary, a practicing Hindu is on a par with a practicing Christian, or Jew, or Muslim.

I’m inclined to tolerate the faiths of people of faith, even in political contexts. I’m even OK with lawmakers crafting laws in accordance with their religious beliefs so long as those laws do not cause harm or infringe the natural rights and liberties of the people in the society where they are enacted.

My own warning would be that smearing Gabbard as a cult member is an insidious thing to do, about the same as ducking Pungo’s Grace Sherwood for witchcraft.

An embarrassment for the US and VA just got worse.

US maternal mortality rate is terrible compared to the rest of the industrial world. And it appears to get worse at least in VA. And the red states are the worst approaching Third World stats. Toss in the new draconian abortion restrictions for low income women (effectively) and we are probably heading to an even greater national tragedy.

Washington’s Whoppers on the War in Ukraine

Source: The American Conservative.

Whenever I post or comment on Ukraine here in the Forum one or both of these whoppers shows up in response:

Two deceptive arguments in U.S. propaganda are so egregious that they stand out as gigantic whoppers. The first whopper is that Russia’s war against Ukraine was entirely unprovoked; nothing Ukraine, the United States, or NATO did, this story goes, threatened Russia or contributed in the slightest to the current bloody tragedy. The second whopper is that Ukraine is a liberal democratic country whose mere existence as a model in Russia’s neighborhood terrifies Vladimir Putin and his inner circle of authoritarian oligarchs.

Thank goodness the writer at TAC takes a moment to debunk them.
