Too many eggs in the wrong basket

Too much reliance on vaccines over therapeutics

The Biden administration’s obsession with coercing vaccines will cost lives in early 2022 as an inadequate supply of Paxlovid results in unnecessary deaths.

With 35 million Americans over 65, and millions more younger with weakened immunity, only 10 million courses were ordered, guaranteeing a shortfall as Omicron sweeps through the population regardless of immune status.

Further supplies will have to wait while other orders by other nations are filled.

Of course, we wouldn’t have this problem if drug store chains were doing the ordering instead of the government. At least one of the many chains would have guessed right and preordered enough to meet the demand, at market prices, of course.

So, now the elderly will have to go back into seclusion ordering their groceries and hiding in their homes to delay infection until the shortfall is relieved.

We should never have trusted government with anything related to our health.  As Milton Freidman warned, “If you put the government in charge of the Sahara Desert, in five years there would be a shortage of sand.”

Immaculate Conception

Source: Wikipedia.

I always thought the phrase “immaculate conception” referred to the virgin birth of Jesus. I was, accordingly, shocked the other day when my wife — a Catholic convert — mentioned in conversation that immaculate conception properly refers to Jesus’ mother and the doctrine that Mary was free of original sin from the moment of her conception.

There’s a kind of rebirth when you discover a whole category of knowledge you didn’t know about. The immaculate conception of Mary is such an event for me, because I was wrong in my assumptions and because the doctrine makes perfect sense. Of course the mother of the Son of God had to be uniquely exempt from the original sin of Adam and Eve.

Fedsurrection, anyone?

I’m responding to all the smug caterwauling seen on this site.

Roger Kimball is super-smart culture pundit. He says the so-called Jan. 6 attack was probably staged by the FBI (Federal Bureau of Insurrections). Whoops.

That’s what I suspected the first day. No matter what video you looked at, you see cops in retreat, cops opening doors, cops removing barriers. What’s a scenario that could explain all that?

Furthermore, I know the Trump voters. They are ordinary people, middle-class and polite. They would not do anything disrespectful at a national monument. The freaks at the Capitol were probably Antifa paid by George Soros.

The people dressed weirdly, the people wrestling with each other, the people acting as if they are in a staged event, well, you know who they are.

I’m guessing that Nancy Pelosi has a lot of bad dreams these days.

Bad Moon Rising

Regeneron ineffective on Omicron

The Omicron mutation is causing a lot of breakthrough infections in both vaccinated and previously recovered patients, and while the variant is not especially lethal for young people, it is still dangerous to the elderly and immunocompromised.

The only worthwhile antibody treatment in the US, the Regeneron cocktail, doesn’t work against Omicron. AstraZeneca’s cocktail does appear to work, but it is scarce and not approved in the US.

That makes prompt deployment of the anti-viral Paxlovid vital if we are to avoid a catastrophic outbreak next month. Paxlovid is a protease inhibitor and is not affected by the mutations to the spike protein.

Already, COVID has killed 1 out of every 100 Americans over 65, and if the FDA keeps dragging its feet, the Social Security shortfall problem will be solved by spring.
