Americans Suffer from Natural and Government-Created Disasters

Imagine there’s no Heaven. — John Lenin

Of the several points the writer makes there are two I find compelling.

The first is that federal disaster spending should be offset by cutting back other spending. This is the responsible thing to do since the alternative is to print money to fund disaster relief or else to raise taxes, both of which are clearly irresponsible.

The second is the idea of eliminating federal disaster spending in its entirety. I doubt the American public can ever be convinced that doing so is a good idea, but theoretically, at least, I see some merit. For example, the certainty of federal disaster relief surely encourages populations to inhabit riskier locales than they otherwise might.

Signing of treaties on accession of Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republics and Zaporozhye and Kherson regions to Russia

Source: President of Russia.

Vladimir Putin’s speech on the occasion of signing of accession treaties yesterday with four of Ukraine’s oblasts is worth reading in its entirety. It remains for the Duma to formally recognize the oblasts as new members of the Russian Federation. Only then will the territories they represent become officially Russian.

The speech criticizes the United States and the West rather harshly. I noticed, however, that all but one the very same criticisms have been made in Tidewater Forum at one time or another by leftist commentators. And the one exception (genderism) is vaguely reminiscent of the old leftist complaint that Western Civilization is morally corrupt.

The speech illustrates an inversion: Those who once loved the Soviet Union, or at least Communists, now hate Russia.

Trump Offers Biden Administration His Services to Help Stave Off World War III

Donald Trump has offered to negotiate for peace between Russia and Ukraine. Some people hate the man, but since no one else is expressing any interest in avoiding a nuclear WW III, I’d hope they put their hatred aside.

Or if the Trump haters cannot stop hating Trump, perhaps one of them could negotiate for peace. Not appeasement, mind you, but peace.

Ukraine shelled a completely civilian area of central Donetsk, killing at least 5 civilians

If you want to know why the referenda that concluded in Ukraine on Tuesday overwhelmingly approved the choice to join Russia, you should explore reports of Ukrainian war crimes, as in this video. Dead bodies in the street in a non-military zone cannot easily be dismissed.

But I expect my moral “superiors” will do so.
