Like it or not, the philosophical preoccupations of the elite affect us all. In this brief video Sabine Hossenfelder lays out the essential elements of longtermism, a philosophy she claims is popular among some famous rich people today.
This philosophy sounds to me like a variation on the theme of collectivism, or an attempt to use the language of risk assessment to justify collectivist ideologies.
Covid-19 hysteria is the greatest propaganda success story in history. Early on, anyone who suggested the disease was comparable to a severe flu was shouted down and denounced. But now we are learning that Covid-19’s infection fatality rate (IFR) is indeed comparable to the flu:
This is a start. As our hindsight matures, I expect we will discover much more about Covid and its vaccines that we wildly misunderstood.

One of the Forum regulars warns that Tulsi Gabbard is a member of a religious cult. Looking at the “cult’s” web site (linked above) I find little to be concerned about.
Hinduism is one of the world’s great religions. On that basis alone it is unrealistic to describe Hindus as members of a cult. On the contrary, a practicing Hindu is on a par with a practicing Christian, or Jew, or Muslim.
I’m inclined to tolerate the faiths of people of faith, even in political contexts. I’m even OK with lawmakers crafting laws in accordance with their religious beliefs so long as those laws do not cause harm or infringe the natural rights and liberties of the people in the society where they are enacted.
My own warning would be that smearing Gabbard as a cult member is an insidious thing to do, about the same as ducking Pungo’s Grace Sherwood for witchcraft.

Whenever I post or comment on Ukraine here in the Forum one or both of these whoppers shows up in response:
Two deceptive arguments in U.S. propaganda are so egregious that they stand out as gigantic whoppers. The first whopper is that Russia’s war against Ukraine was entirely unprovoked; nothing Ukraine, the United States, or NATO did, this story goes, threatened Russia or contributed in the slightest to the current bloody tragedy. The second whopper is that Ukraine is a liberal democratic country whose mere existence as a model in Russia’s neighborhood terrifies Vladimir Putin and his inner circle of authoritarian oligarchs.
Thank goodness the writer at TAC takes a moment to debunk them.
Does Ms. Gabbard wish to invigorate the Libertarian Party?

These Democrats seem confused (see note), but more power to ’em. They have the right idea.
Note: The Ukrainian people have not, in fact, dealt “a historic military defeat to Russia.”
When I was in grade school my teachers encouraged us to read international media to better understand the world. That was good advice back then, but perhaps it needs an upgrade today.
Continue reading “Some Media Won’t Tell You When The Saudis Snub Biden”This is a curious story. The 101st began arriving in Romania last June.
Also, while lethal, the 101st is a relatively small contingent of less than 5,000 light infantry troops. By itself it is an inadequate force to accomplish much of anything on the battlefield in Ukraine.
So why now, and why this division?
Intelligence, or stupidity?
