  1. Maybe with Netanyahu leaving office they can turn away from the dark side. Likud with its territorial ambitions, intransigence and violence has been the main obstacle to real peace for decades.

    1. I don’t know. When you have an annual holiday celebrating the forced displacement of your neighbors that culminates in thousands of people chanting “death to Palestinians,” and “may their names be erased” your society may be fundamentally rotten.

    1. Finding moderates on both sides of this is the challenge. They do exist, but similar to here, the louder voices get the press.

      As a Democrat, I take umbrage with your assertion that ALL Dems want is to help the Palestinians.

      And your comment ignores the fact that there are many in Israel who feel the same way about the Palestinians.

      The majority of Democrats support Israel unconditionally. Notice how mad they get at Bernie or AOC or Omar when they stray outside the official narrative.
      How is any American party helping Palestinians? We’re giving Israel almost $4B a year, almost entirely military aid.
      It is the Israelis, not the Palestinians, who are attempting ethnic cleansing of the area. There are no Palestinian bulldozers razing Israeli neighborhoods.

        If you allow your neighborhood to be used as a base to murder children in their schools, you’re going to get bulldozers.

        1. Maybe no rockets, but there are bombs being dropped from fighter jets on civilian Palestinian targets.

          The only children that have been murdered in this recent outbreak of violence are Palestinians. And the bulldozers are to expand Israeli territory. If it was for security, they wouldn’t immediately move Israelis into the “settlements.”

          You don’t know what you’re talking about; you’re relying on the ideological assumption that US allies are right and official enemies must be wrong.

          1. I know that who use the human shields of residential neighborhoods as launching points to fire rockets into other residential neighborhoods are wrong. Full stop.

            Doing so is against all international laws of war.

            They aren’t expanding Israeli territory, they are clearing and resettling areas inside Israel the Palestinians have used to for acts of terror against Israelis.

          2. Always with the “human shields.” It’s the same official narrative every time. Israel has long demonstrated they have no qualms killing civilians and bombing populated areas, so I don’t think human can be called a shield in any case. Kicking people out of their homes and treating one group of people as second class citizens and controlling their movement is wrong. Full stop.

            Regarding “international laws of war” that would imply this was a war against two sovereign nations. Is that what you’re saying? Do the Palestinians have a right to defend themselves from foreign aggression?

            I suppose one man’s act of terror is another man’s rebellion against tyrannical authority. I assumed a self-styled “libertarian” might grasp that concept.

          3. Every square inch of Israel in excess of the original borders has come as the result of Arab attempts to wipe out Israel.

            Once attacked, Israel had every right to hold territory taken in a defensive war and leave itself with more defenable borders.

          4. You’re talking about Sinai and the Golan Heights but these conflicts are now happening in the West Bank around Jerusalem in territory that is according to the “original borders” either supposed to be shared or outright Palestinian.

          5. The West Bank became part of Israel after the 6 day war, the 3rd attempt to exterminate the Israelis.

            Israel was only 11 miles wide at the narrow part prior to the 6 day war, a tactical nightmare. When Jordan joined the attack, Israel pushed them back to the current border. The West Banl is part of Israel by right of conquest in a defensive war.

            It’s not often Don and I agree, but the tactic of firing rockets from residential areas has long been in place in Gaza.

          7. Where are they supposed to fire them from? There are only residential areas in Gaza. It’s one of the most densely populated places on earth. You know, because they’re walled off and not allowed to leave. And shot dead if they get too close to the wall. Their water and sewage plants were deliberately targeted by an air strike a few years ago and Israel controls their electrical grid. They only get a few hours of power a day. Human rights groups have called Gaza an “open air prison.”

            In conditions like those I might consider armed resistance too.

            They want a better life? Stop letting their leaders spend aid money on weapons and work to make living conditions better. Educate their children in a way that does not tell them their neighbor is their enemy.

    So this is interesting. J Post says Abbas (of the Arab party) was finalizing talks to join Bennett and Lapid’s parties in coalition against Likud. Obviously Abbas can’t do that while Israel is launching air strikes and invading mosques during Ramadan so, if true, Netanyahu may have just saved his own ass for another few months.

    1. Potentially an accurate assessment. However, I believe the coalition government still has time to be formed. Especially if you consider they may be able to curtail the violence and response.

      Time for Bibi to go. My grandmother, who’s father was a STAUNCH Zionist back in the day, never really liked him all that much.

          3. If the army came to evict you from the house you built, that you had been living in for decades, so that they could give it to some other family just because of your religion, how might that make you feel?

            There are no reports of anything other than rock throwing before they kicked in the doors of the mosque during the most important time of the year for Muslims. The IDF knew this was a provocation. So now Hamas will launch some bottle rockets and keep attacking with slingshots while the IDF uses US surplus fighter planes to level entire apartment blocks.

          5. Are you suggesting that all Palestinians are active insurgents? Israel doesn’t just take homes from suspected militants. They clear entire neighborhoods. And ONCE AGAIN this is ongoing and was BEFORE the retaliation from Hamas.

            There are just as many quotes from high ranking Israelis advocating Palestinian genocide. Which side is doing a better job of carrying it out?

          7. I’ll say this one last time. The evictions had nothing to do with tracking down insurgents. Not even the Israeli press is claiming that. This is just using the force of the military to kick people out of their homes for territorial expansion.

            You are shilling for a regime that isn’t even trying to make these excuses for itself.

          The fact that Jordan’s history from decades ago was bad does not exonerate Likud fascists from current war crimes. When Nazis executed innocent people to deter resistance in areas they controlled they were prosecuted for war crimes. When Israeli war planes drop bombs on civilians in areas they control for the same purpose that too is a war crime.

            No matter that Palestinians are not wanted en masse by the ruling monarchs of medieval kingdoms. That is absolutely irrelevant to the behavior of the Likud fascists. If you know history, you know that nobody wanted refugee Jews either – and that includes the United States. The fact they were not wanted did not make it okay to round them up in ghettos and kill them.

The area referred to as Palistine, which was the birthplace of Christianity and Judaism, has been conquored and controlled by numerous regimes and kingdoms since before 8th century BC, most recently in the 20th century AD it was controlled by the Ottomans and then Britain. Palestinians never had a declared state in this entire time until the UN attempted to split the region into 2 states in 1947, one controlled by Jews and one by Arabs. Jews said Ok and Israel was born, Arabs including Palistinians said no and have attacked Israel ever since. Israel bested them all in continued war leaving only the West Bank and Gaza under Arab control when Israel conquered those in the 6 day war. So Palestinians are their own victim for not accepting the partition plan in 1947 and living happily. Instead they declared war on Israel, lost and continue to attack to this day. Israel has every right to the spoils of war they didn’t start and every right to protect itself.

        1. It is of course relevant, but Bob and Don have both argued that annexation is spoils of war. That may be true in the case of Sinai and GH, but not in the Palestinian or neutral areas where it is currently happening.

          If their argument is that this is a war, then that necessarily implies that Palestine is or should be a state, which I don’t think either of them is going to do.

          In any case, wars of conquest are also against the laws of war. Determined in the Nuremberg Trials no less.

          2. Israel does not “own it” though. The neighborhoods in question are in parts of East Jerusalem that are supposed to be under Palestinian control. The UN, most countries, and most international aid organizations consider the West Bank occupied territory because Israel habitually reneges on treaties and annexes new land.

    2. The WW I victors drew a lot of maps in the ME after the war. They did not take into consideration the tribal nor nomadic nature of the people’s who actually lived there.

      The 1947 partition plan, which established and recognized the State of Israel was not fair to those already residing there. European guilt over the Holocaust is what led to it. But the neighboring countries have NEVER assisted the Palestinian people, except to provide them with weapons to attempt what many of them want: The destruction of Israel.

      There is no easy answer to this problem, folks. Not one comment here has been wrong. If you think so, you don’t know as much as you THINK you know about the region and its residents.

  7. I find it interesting when people arm themselves to the teeth, puff up their chests and promise death to tyrants are the same ones who side with the tyrants every time.

    Benjamin Netanyahu is a corrupt fascist. Likud is a fascist party. They are in power because they murdered Yitzhak Rabin to derail a real peace process. While talking peace, they continue to steal Palestinian homes and farms and water. More than a million people are crammed into closed ghettos very reminiscent of the Warsaw ghetto. The people in these prisons have no rights and no opportunities. They are victims of collective punishments – a war crime under international law. But when they resist or demonstrate they are labelled as “terrorists.”

    It is long past time for our country to end all military aid to such a regime. If they cannot obey international law and make peace with their neighbors, then let them defend themselves. They are a rich country. They have money for universal health care. We don’t.
