NRO: Democrats in Virginia Target State’s Right to Work Law for Repeal

It’s never good when Virginia gets noticed in national media outlets. This is no exception.

I spent 10 years working in the trades when I was young. I don’t recall that unions were particularly beloved, although occasionally I’d meet a “union man” who wore his affiliation like a badge of honor. Virginia’s right-to-work law was generally appreciated.

Maybe things are different today, but I imagine the repeal of right to work is of more interest to Virginia’s elites than to Virginia’s workers. It is exactly the sort of erosion of freedom to be expected from the suits.

  1. I tend to agree with the idea of “right to work”. However, if you have that right, you have the right to try and negotiate your own pay and benefits. If you want the same benefits as a union worker, who’s pay and bennies have been negotiated between the union and the company, you should not get that benefit without contributing to what the union does. IMHO.

Over the years, unions have lost sight of their primary duty: worker protection and representation. If they had stuck to that and not branched into the political side of things, maybe there would not be such a backlash against them today. Just a thought.
