To some, it certainly appears that way.

This is the Republican party. Trump hasn’t “hijacked” it, he’s just too dumb to understand how euphemisms work and happened to come along at a time when they’re no longer necessary. He’s just part of the trajectory the Republicans have been on since Nixon.
If you want the Republican party of Eisenhower or Rockefeller, that’s the current Democratic party.

“current Democratic party.”
I would agree that the “moderate” portion of the DEM party is clearly more like the GOP of the late 50s, 60s, and 70s,
Even Reagan would be a DEM by the standard of the GOP’s fiscal and societal incoherency today.

Actually, I think at this point, JFK would be a Republican and Reagan would be a Libertarian

““Ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country,”” JFK
Democrats of today, ‘Free Stuff from government,’
In enacting the then largest tax cuts on ALL income levels, JFK “A rising tide lifts all ships”
Democrats today ‘Social justice means taxing anyine with a dollar more than me’
JFK would be horrified with what the Democratic Party has become.
Reagan wouldn’t like today’s GOP, but he would despise the Democrats. as he was staunchly anti-communist, and opposed Medicare for that reason.
