Is it ethical to purchase a lithium battery powered EV?

Source: CFACT.

It is interesting to contemplate that the laws of physics are in some sense the basis of morality, but — to be fair — that is not really the point of the source article.

The point (according to the source) is that EVs cause more damage to the environment than GVs (gasoline vehicles) or other fossil fuel-powered vehicles.

I don’t begrudge an EV owner his purchase, but I reject the idea that EVs are good for the economy or for Gaia.

  1. Confusing them with facts doesn’t work. I’ve tried it for years.

Environmentalism is a religion; you might as well tell Baptists you’ve found the body.

    1. Made up and cherry-picked facts are not particularly persuasive.

The global environment is in very serious trouble. Climate change is only one part of the problem. The many problems are so huge that only governments and global institutions can address them. And that is why doctrinaire government-haters such as yourself deny the need for action and postulate all sorts of corruption and conspiracies – emotional rather than rational. IMHO

What made up and cherry-picked facts do you see in the article?

For that matter, what makes you think the global environment is in very serious trouble?

        1. I was referring to Dr. Tabor’s selective cites over the years and hyperbolic accusations of mass death from green policies.

This article seems fine if a little over wrought. It identifies many of the issues with lithium batteries.

As for the global environment being in trouble, do you really doubt the truth of that?

          1. Global warming with more extremes of weather
          2. Rising sea levels
          3. Deforestation
          4. Shrinking bio-diversity from the human induced mass extinction event.
          5. Pollinators at risk
          6. Over fishing everywhere.
          7. Coral colonies world-wide dying off.
          8. Dying off of ocean plankton which generate 50-80% of the oxygen in the environment.

Yes, I do doubt it, your list of symptoms notwithstanding.

  2. I don’t think anybody serious about environmentalism believes EV’s are going to save the planet. The best thing to do is to buy a USED Prius or something similarly efficient. But, absent a restructuring of our entire transportation infrastructure, marginally more efficient personal vehicles aren’t really going to do much. Actual environmentalists–not the straw men erected by oil and car companies–are advocating more rail and public transit. Oh, and a drastic reduction in meat consumption–the thing almost nobody ever talks about.

  3. Not only does the increased mining cause more damage to the environment but another point of contention is that the US imports abt 80% of our rare earth minerals from China who is not particularly an ally of ours. Once again, the eco-nazi zeal to go “green” is not well thought out on so many fronts it isn’t funny. Will they then demand bra burning to save the planet and go bamboo viscose instead causing bamboo over harvesting? Then what will the pandas eat? It’s a vicious cycle ya know…
