Who Will Build the Roads? Anyone Who Stands to Benefit from Them.

Source: Mises Institute.

This story fascinates me because it disconnects profit from self-interest.

That the profit motive is immoral is one of the most basic complaints about capitalism, but also one of the most fallacious. It misses the fact that profit is the source of process improvements that increase productivity. Instead of pretending to be psychologists whose theories depend on incentive networks, economists should talk more about the “process improvement motive,” or about profit as a business expense.

In any case, the notion that so-called public goods would not exist unless government provided them is thoroughly debunked. The singular role of government to serve as the producer of public goods is simply mythical.

  1. Walter E Williams explained “Capitalism is relatively new in human history. Before the rise of capitalism, the way people amassed great wealth was by looting, plundering, and enslaving their fellow man. Capitalism made it possible to become wealthy by serving one’s fellow man. Capitalists seek to discover what people want and then produce and market it as efficiently as possible.”

The ills people ascribe to capitalism are really the result of cronyism, and those who complain the most feverishly push for the policies that make cronyism possible.

      1. How?

Sounds like your prejudice speaking there.

The more power we give government, the more favors it can offer to cronies. There used to be dozens of electric companies in Virginia, with overlapping service areas. But now we have a regulated monopoly with the power to demand subsidies and protection from competition.

It’s not the GOP that wants government control of the marketplace.

Pot, meet kettle? You do it every day, so please refrain from accusing me of doing EXACTLY what you have done.

The GOP doesn’t want anything but P-O-W-E-R. And then turn it over to the oligarchs who DO control the marketplace. I.e. CRONYISM in the purest sense.
