This is probably good news for Google critics. There’s nothing like a labor union to change corporate culture, and nothing like a woke labor union to make a company dysfunctional.

James Couzens, the Ford treasurer, said: “It is our belief that social justice begins at home. We want those who have helped us to produce this great institution and are helping to maintain it to share our prosperity. We want them to have present profits and future prospects. … Believing as we do, that a division of our earnings between capital and labor is unequal, we have sought a plan of relief suitable for our business.”

Some people believe a commonly-told story that Henry Ford paid his assembly line workers high wages for philosophical and moral reasons — to promote social justice. The story has been debunked many times, as here:

Google’s new labor union is interesting because it represents an attempt at grass-roots social activism in a business setting. The employees want to leverage the company’s wealth in the pursuit of utopian goals. Google’s wealth, of course, is so vast that it can certainly endure any inconveniences the employees are likely to stir up.
What we have here is a superfluous union apparently motivated by superfluous notions. This is the exact opposite of Henry Ford’s pay raise.

The Forbes article does not refute that better paid workers do put more money into the economy, however.
A quibble is trying to compare buying cars with buying jetliner. The Boeing workers wouldn’t buy a plane, that is absurd.
But they can, and do, buy airline tickets, which is essentially the same thing.

It doesn’t need to. Higher wages are not paid with magic money. It was prcecisely Ford’s problem that he wasn’t getting full value for the lower wage rate.
