World Central Kitchen is an organization designed to feed the vulnerable. And at the same time keep restaurants afloat.
Pharrell Williams is helping fund the Hampton Roads version in conjunction with the international organization. Jose Andres is the founder. Some might remember him setting up tent kitchens in Puerto Rico after The hurricane. He was putting out like 100,000 meals a day.
Here, the deal is that they have signed up dozens of restaurants. They cook meals for certain customers like elderly or homeless or other distressed folks.
WCK picks them up and delivers them. One restaurant is cooking 1100 meals a day. Others are in the hundreds. WCK pays them $10/meal. The owners get to keep staff, pay the rent and people get fed. It’s that simple.
This organization does this all over the world. Funding is from donations and philanthropy. Andres’ rules are that the food must be fresh, tasty and nutritious.
