This is something new, to me at least. Fascinating!

I have heard reporting about how the current strain of the virus is in the “corona” family. I believe that is the reason they designated this one as COVID-19 (I think it breaks down a Corona Virus ID – 19. 19 being the year it was “born”).
And this nugget can be taken as a touch of good news …” that COVID-19 does not mutate very fast – in fact, it’s 8-10 times slower than the influenza virus, and closer to other coronaviruses such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).” Slower mutation rate means that once an effective vaccine is developed it won’t have to change too much from year to year. The annual flu vaccine gets tweaked from year to year to be effective.
Remember that Dr. Fauci said late last week he would not be surprised if this became a seasonal thing. We may slow it down to near zero by the end of summer, but it could return in the fall. That is the gist of what I heard him say.

I have, too. That scientists have detected different variants of SARS-CoV-2, the virus’s formal name, is what’s new, at least to me.

I suppose it is to separate the various stands?
The more things change the more they stay the same also comes to mind

Cheer up, it’s a poor parasite that kills the host… mutations can be a good thing.
