Trump continues to lie even as the virus spreads exponentially.

So much for the “wartime President” acting like one. To be fair, this may not actually be yet more of his con man dishonesty but rather the sheer stupidity of a man who cannot read a one page briefing paper or stay awake during a presentation. He may, in fact, be so stupid that he believes that FDA approval to test a therapy is the same as FDA approval to make it generally available.

Either way – dishonest or stupid – his luck has run out. He is not the kind of person we need in the Oval Office in this or any other crisis.

  1. “sheer stupidity“ maybe..

It would be tempting to ascribe his comments and decisions to just that, but I think general ignorance, a total lack of empathy and narcissistic personality disorder (maybe redundant) need to be in the mix as well.

    IMHO

  2. “… they’ve gone through the approval process. It’s been approved.”

    Maybe for Malaria.

So some person hears this and decides I need to get back to my job and since we have a cure, I should be just fine. Never mind the finer point that he would be spreading the virus to others.

Honestly, this is endangering Americans even further.

  3. Trump speaks and almost immediately someone points out that what he just said is a misstatement of the facts. And Trump just keeps doing it over and over and over.

And yet his defenders come out and say it is WE who are misstating the facts.

  4. RE: “He [Trump] may, in fact, be so stupid that he believes that FDA approval to test a therapy is the same as FDA approval to make it generally available.”

    A lame and useless speculation.

According to the AP fact check, chloroquine was already approved for so-called “off label” use. In response to the epidemic the FDA revisited the existing approval in light of using the drug as a Covid-19 therapy. The FDA then re-affirmed the approval, adding data collection and testing requirements to determine efficacy for this specific application.

In full context, Trump’s statement is 100% correct:

“And we’re going to be able to make that drug available almost immediately, and that’s where the FDA has been so great. They — they’ve gone through the approval process. It’s been approved.”

    Specifically:

    • We are able to make the drug available almost immediately.
    • The FDA did review (“go through”) the original approval process.

    • The drug has been approved all along.

I’d also agree that the FDA “has been so great” on this issue. Their job was to verify that therapeutic use for treating Covid-19 posed no dangerous or unnecessary risks. By all accounts, they accomplished this quickly.

Negative, irrational posts like this one make a good argument for shutting down Tidewater Forum. Unless we all work to improve the quality of discussion here, the place will succumb to a tragedy of the commons.

    1. “Unless we all work to improve the quality of discussion her”

Translated:”You should ALL agree with everything I post because I am always right and you others are misinformed idiots who believe real news over my conspiracy laden truthiness.”

Yes, the drug has been approved previously for off label usage. Great. Let the testing begin. If it is beneficial in treating the virus, great. But what about PREVENTION? We have a flu shot for the annual flu that goes around annually.

Saying it’s gonna work without the testing is being optimistic. Perhaps overly. Even Dr. Fauci said we have to test it and find out. Optimism is a good thing. Over optimism, which Mr. Trump is quite goodly at CAN be dangerous to others who think this 50 year old drug is the magic bullet we are seeking.

In full context, Trump’s statement is 100% WRONG. Which is why he was immediately corrected by the head of the FDA risking his job by contradicting Dear Leader.

Trump might as well have promised that Viagra was the miracle cure we need. After all . . .

      “Specifically:

We are able to make the drug available almost immediately.
The FDA did review (“go through”) the original approval process.
The drug has been approved all along.”

Too bad that Viagra – just like Chloroquine – has not been shown to help with this Covid-19.

Snake oil salesman selling snake oil. Pure and simple. And, to make it worse, the drug he is pushing is extremely dangerous. . .

But he didn’t, which means that your speculation about the president’s competence applies to something that didn’t happen. Not useful.

I am so sorry that you are unable to understand the point I made with the example of Viagra. It was actually not hard to follow if you really, really try. Let me try to help you . . .

I said that “Trump might as well have” touted Viagra not that he did tout it. Why did I say that? Because countless drugs pass the three tests that you listed. Viagra was one of them. The test that NONE of them has passed is the one that counts – does it ameliorate the disease.

Here is what Trump said . . .

“And we’re going to be able to make that drug available almost immediately, and that’s where the FDA has been so great. They — they’ve gone through the approval process. It’s been approved.”

That was a LIE in this context. That malaria drug has NOT been approved for the treatment of Covid-19. It will NOT be available almost immediately.

How do you think it is useful for Trump to spread false hope the only effect of which will be to make some people take this threat less seriously and by behaving badly, KILL people?

I wanted to snark, “you first”, but will instead opine that the quality of discussion/commenting is fine.

You seem to have a problem with being called out for your lengthy and inaccurate posts. I think the problem is that the actual reality of what is taking place does not coincide with your world view.

I’m not sure how to fix your problem.

You can take the trouble to explain your criticisms, when you choose to make them. In my experience, you are quick to call others stupid in some way or another, but you never substantiate the assertion, even when asked to do so. I’d be happy to change my posting habits based on feedback I can use, but the feedback I get isn’t usable.

Here, for example, you accuse me of writing lengthy and inaccurate posts, but you don’t identify a single inaccuracy I wrote.

    4. Come on that is Trumpian semantics and lying propaganda.

The FDA specifically said it had not been approved yet as a treatment for Covid 19. Trump said it had. What the hell was he talking about? Measles?

We know the drug has been approved for malaria and off-label. But the topic was COVID 19, period. That is at best gross misrepresentation and at worst dangerous.

While we are on the subject. You are correct. Trump did not say personally that the virus was like a common cold. But at the same time as he was dismissing its seriousness as a political hoax and all 12 cases were doing fine, his mouthpieces, like Limbaugh and I believe Hannity, did use common cold. They have audiences in the tens of millions who believed that. And they effectively speak for Trump.

He should have corrected them if he was going to lead America correctly. Trump and his powerful media giants were not being straight with Americans.

The same with this semantics game you are playing. You are insulting everyone’s intelligence with the gobbledegook propaganda and twisting statements.

The facts are simple: Trump dismissed the virus as a serious threat until a week or so ago. We have known about it since December. There is no vaccine very soon. There is no approved drug for treatment now. There is no Obama rule. Testing is way behind. Supplies are short or gone. Plus the Democrats had to lead the way since the administration and GOP either DIW or stuck in the “insult the opposition” mode. Now finally some money is going out.

If you don’t stop playing these friggin games, perhaps you should go elsewhere yourself. You don’t realize that everyone would love to end this mess. We would love for Trump to be straight with Americans and not blame everyone else. Or give false senses of security. The administration has been jerking us around for months on this problem. The critics are right in demanding truth not snake oil. They are the true patriots.

I doubt you understand what I just wrote, but like I said, quarantine is the devil’s workshop.

I think I am done with my opinion now.

    5. Donald Trump has no idea what he is talking about from one moment to the next. It was vaguely entertaining for a while to wonder what flippity-flap would fall out his mouth next. We used to worry about him having “THE CODES”. Now, though, we got to worry about him really believing he’s a genius, and, scarier still – that he’s a world-class medical researcher in the field of pandemics.

People who have taken on the task of defending his craziness must twist themselves in knots 24/7. Good grief – that MUST be unrelentingly painful.

I think you’re wasting your time. All the twisting in the world will not make ‘djt’ one bit smarter. And, neither will it make him one iota closer to understanding what a failure he is at pretending to be presidential.
