It’s always a sad thing when a member of the military passes away like this. But for me personally, this is extra sad.
I had the honor and privilege of serving as part of the pre-commissioning crew of USS VELLA GULF (CG-72) in 1993. I arrived as a Second Class PO and transferred 3 years later as a CPO. I was one of the first three crew members to earn the Surface Warfare designator in the command’s history and was runner-up sailor of the Year in ’94. It was the best tour of duty in a lot of ways in my 24-plus years of honorable service. This is a terrible tragedy, as all deaths on active duty are. And while I did not know BM2 Khan, this one is personal.
RIP Boats. We have the watch.
Lives lost preserving the peace are no less tragic than those lost restoring it.

Most people don’t realize how dangerous it can be aboard a ship, particularly carriers.
Rest in n Peace.
