An easily solved conundrum

School year 2021-2022 start day falls on the same day as Rosh Hashonah, the Jewish New Year and the beginning of the High Holy Day season. The VB School Board spent about 30 seconds discussing and voted to force students and staff of the Jewish faith to choose between missing the first day of school or not attending synagogue. This is not acceptable.

There is an easy fix. Delay the start of school by one day, or start the school year BEFORE Labor Day.

Growing up in PA, as part of the Jewish minority, no practicing member of the faith could earn a perfect attendance award. While the absences for religious worship were excused, they still counted as a missed day. And never was it possible for the first day of school to fall on any of the High Holy Days because the year began PRIOR to Labor Day.

I call on those of us on this forum to stand with the staff and students of Jewish faith and support whatever necessary change is required to protect the religious freedoms of all.

  1. Yeah, that’s pretty bad. Christians get a week off for their (re-purposed pagan) big holidays. Can you imagine the uproar if they were asked to do otherwise?

    Also, I’m pretty sure most of the other local districts start that same day, so this will be an issue across the region. If a student misses the first day of school they must be recorded as a no-show (as if they have dropped out). This can be corrected later, but it is a pain in the butt and easily remedied by school districts. Then there is the added chaos of a teacher having to miss the first day of school . . .

  2. Idiots. Call it a snow day. That’s a quick administrative fix that will ensure the continued flow of Federal money, which is what it all comes down to, and then set about the task of making sure that this doesn’t happen for the foreseeable future. It’s not like Jews, Muslims, Wichans, etc., etc., just arbitrarily set holidays. There are lunar, solar and menses cycles involved in all of the voodoo.

    1. Menses? Seriously? I get it. You are not a religious person. But seriously, menses?

      Keep in mind, the state requirement is for 180 days of instruction. VB goes by 183 days, which is fine. But adding an additional day off to the Labor Day weekend, this one time, would still allow for the 183 days.

      1. It was the only other major cycle that ruins our lives and came to mind. Besides, I said Wichan, or is it Wiccan? Both cause ire to the spellchecker.

        Speaking of which, did ya see the PBS show last night on the Creationists and their museum? Ye Gods and little fishes! Wait, I meant Jesus H… Wait, ah the Hell with it.

        Religion is fine. Gods are necessary to comfort some people and to answer some questions. If people need the answer to “Why?” questions, gods and their religions are paramount. But they should STOP using God and religion to seek the answers to “How?” questions..

        Example:
        “Why is there an Earth and Life on it?” God.

        Perfectly legitimate answer, unlikely to be proved wrong or inconsistent, and those of us who don’t care, won’t care what you come up with.

        “How did the Earth and Life on it come to exist?” Well, best observations indicate that… Our whole universe was in a hot dense state, then nearly fourteen billion years ago expansion started. Wait…the Earth began to cool, the autotrophs began to drool, Neanderthals developed tools,… You get the picture.

        It’s a matter of observation and evidence.
        One has them. One doesn’t.
        One is philosophy and religion. The other is science and the scientific method.

        1. I wasn’t trying to be demeaning. I respect those who feel the same way you do. Ya know, live and let live? But the cycle really made me laugh. I see your point on it, but… I forgot to add emojis to it.

          And having a friend growing up who was Wiccan, I can vouch for THAT spelling. Spellchecker be damned. So to speak.

            I love deeply religious people, There’s one born every minute.

            Tune to C.20 on the Cox every morning and watch them get fleeced by the funny looking woman who could play the Joker without a session in makeup.

  3. Do you think I might convince them to do the same for St. Patty’s day? Its very important for me and the kids to go out bar hopping. Or how about girls have the whole month off for womens history month? Make exceptipns for one and you must do it for all.

  4. Funny. Conservatives regularly refer to our founding principles as rooted in the Judeo-Christian beliefs.

    When it comes to holidays, the Judeo part is missing.
