This could be positive. I favor letting the Philippines go without a fight. We can re-invest the savings in the Space Force.

The decisive issue seems to be the Trump administration’s not granting a visa to a mass murderer who carried out Duterte’s program of killing drug dealers and addicts. For once, I will say – Good for Trump, he is doing the right thing. If it is his doing and he doesn’t cave for his former pal when he learns of it when he picks up HIS issue of Russia Today.

This move by Duterte seems to be more of a hissy fit than anything else. I wonder how long it will be before the Philippines needs US assistance again? I see no issue with letting it go at this point.
I spent several visits in the PI during the early part of my career. We had a base there for a very long time, which included ship repair facilities for quick repairs during deployments. There were hundreds, if not thousands, of locals employed there. I don’t know what happened to the Subic Bay economy after that. I do recall fondly the many walks over Shit River to enjoy the liberty in town.
Kind of sad, but if President Duterte wants more independence for his military, then more power to him. If he really believes other countries will offer better terms, I think he is mistaken. We’ll just spend more money in Japan to maintain a presence in the Pacific and Indian Oceans.
