The Mind Unleashed: A New Space Race? US, China, Russia, and Europe All Plan for Moon Bases

Link to source.

I’m not particularly worried about the weaponization of space. It is inevitable for the same reasons the weaponization of the seas occurred during the Age of Exploration. The consequences will likely be roughly the same, as well: the emergence of transformative technologies and vast wealth with relatively little actual warfare in the new domain itself.

Thus, I share the link for the encouraging news it represents.

  1. Interesting piece. Thank you for sharing it.

I agree it can be encouraging news. The ISS has been a good and cooperative scientific project. The only problem is, as stated, someone, could be the US or China or any of the others involved will have someone that wants to weaponize it. I am optimistic that the cooler, scientific heads will prevail.

  2. War in space reminds me of work done for the Cruise Missile Office at APL.

When I presented some analysis of a wargame attack by blue force ships on a red surface action group, one of the brass hats wanted me to “go back and do it again and include results for up to Sea State 9 (basically a Cat3/4 hurricane)”.

After an awkward silence, in which my mind was racing with thoughts of “Is this guy an idiot?”, I appeased him with “That’s way outside launch specs and we have no reliable data past what we’ve done already.” I then added “And I don’t think you want to be sinking a possible rescuer.”

The hostility of the environment dictates action/inaction more than any foe ever could.
