Mixed feelings on this

https://www.cnn.com/2019/12/10/politics/trump-order-judaism-nationality/index.html

While I appreciate the sentiment behind the idea of this EO, I am concerned that now Jews, instead of just being a religion, will now be a nation. I am an American Jew and have been since birth. I am not part of the nation of Israel. And while I am supportive of the country, I am not supportive of some of the governments that have come and gone there.

I know it would take an act of Congress to change the related portion of the Civil Rights Act to include religion, but that would be the better way forward. The protection of religious freedom and protections against discrimination based on religion should be part of the law itself and not added under an EO that can be rescinded at a later time by another President.

The fact that laws such as the Civil Rights Act are necessary is also disturbing. The ideals of “all men are created equal” are enshrined in our founding documents. Yet laws such as this have become needed to meet the evolution of this country.

So I say this. Trump’s heart is in the right place on this. However, I believe his thought process is misguided and he should have made an attempt to get Congress to take the appropriate action.

Wait, which “there”? I mean this can hardly be called a clear and distinguishing statement, since I don’t think you’re very supportive of the one here at the moment either.

I can see how this can be helpful in a situation as narrowly described in the article, but this can be a real can-o-worms. Just look at being Asian and Harvard… lots of wasted litigation coming.

BTW, many years ago, I worked for a small company owned by a immigrant Turkish Jew. He called one day to the SBA about 8A status wanting to know more about it (this was long before the internet and easy research of such things).

He was told being a Turkish Jew was not a minority. He replied, “If you can find a smaller minority, tell me.”

    1. I was referring to Israel. I thought the “there” would be clear enough. If I meant here, I would have said “here”.

And while I am not supportive of this President (or his minions in the not-so-GOP), I am still supportive of actions by many in our government that attempt to do what is right, no matter how badly thwarted they are by Mr. Trump.

      1. Are we sure that this is “doing what is right”?

I’m afraid that this will ensnare those who are critical of Israel and it’s government will now face punitive measures normally reserved for racists.

        Certain Congresswomen come to mind.

        1. I didn’t say that this was right…or wrong for that matter.

The difference between antisemitism and anti-Israeli government is definitely going to be blurred by this. Again, the reason religious discrimination should be covered by the law and not an executive order.

      2. Here, there, and everywhere. Or, there, they’re, their.
        Just chain yanking.

I suppose that so long as a the designation “Jewish Catholic” is covered with the same legal enthusiasm as is “Irish Catholic” then I cannot immediately see where things can go south with this. But, in the deep recesses, I just know that something will. Given a 3 year history of Trumpism, where’s the hook?

“All rise for Rabbi O’Brien will now give the convocation address.”

          1. Guy walks into a urologist’s office…
“Doc, I want to be castrated.”
“Uh, are you sure about this? I don’t generally perform this procedure.”
            “Yeah, absolutely.”
“Well, okay. I’m going to use a local, so just don’t look down.”

“All done. As long as the anesthetic is still in effect, would you like to be circumcised, too?”
            “That’s the word!”

I agree Doc, mutilation is mutilation, and it’s mutilation of the worst kind.

          2. Unfortunately we differ on this. While certainly far less harmful than “female circumcision” performed under the auspices of religion in 3rd world nations (and sometimes here illegally), it is permanent scarring.
