Are our priorities in the right place?

George Will was in the Pilot today and wrote an opinion about the NCAA, student athletes and fairness. I could not find a Pilot link, but it is also in WAPO.

In the column he mention that the highest paid public employees in 39 states were football or basketball coaches. Saban of Alabama gets $8 million, for example.

In the global marketplace, competitive skills probably don’t include being a defensive end or a point guard except for a very few individuals. Yet we seem to value such talent more than science and technology.

And here is the irony. With such an emphasis on sports, why do we have an epidemic of obesity among our young? Where is our ROI for all that money?

Remember these are taxpayer funded schools, too.
