Politico: Ukrainian efforts to sabotage Trump backfire

https://www.politico.com/story/2017/01/ukraine-sabotage-trump-backfire-233446

I get the sense that many anti-Trumpers are unaware of some of the backstory on Ukraine as it relates to the 2016 election. The link was much discussed in some circles when it came out almost two years ago, but it never got a lot of mainstream press attention. The second graph is the money quote:

“Ukrainian government officials tried to help Hillary Clinton and undermine Trump by publicly questioning his fitness for office. They also disseminated documents implicating a top Trump aide in corruption and suggested they were investigating the matter, only to back away after the election. And they helped Clinton’s allies research damaging information on Trump and his advisers, a Politico investigation found.”

  1. OMG! What a revelation!

Ukraine – which was at war with Russia – publicly criticized the fitness for office of a Russian stooge!

Turns out they were right. Trump has sold them down the river leaving them with no real choice. The weapons they needed to hold back Russian tanks were made contingent on their producing non-existent dirt on Joe Biden.

I don’t see the story as any great revelation. It merely shows that top Democrats and officials in the prior administration sought dirt on Trump from the Ukrainians, just as Trump is alleged to have sought dirt on Biden from the Ukrainians.

It is something to be aware of when accusing Trump of Constitutional violations.

    Bull. Extremely lame whataboutism.

There is a world of difference between an paid operative gathering information by talking to people in a foreign government versus the President of the United States withholding vital military equipment contingent on the foreign government providing the “favor” of launching an investigation of a political rival.

This difference is so palpable that you embarrass yourself – again – by bringing it up.

You seem to think so, but part of the significance of Politico’s reporting is that administration officials were involved in the dirt gathering on Trump. That’s not “whataboutism.” It’s just a matter of record.

Where in the article does it say that “administration officials were involved in the dirt gathering on Trump?”

Are you confusing the Obama administration with the government of Ukraine?

Re-reading the article more closely I find I misrepresented the role of “administration officials” in my comments on it. I assumed that Alexandra Chalupa had close ties to the State Department, particularly through her position at the Atlantic Council, a foriegn affairs think tank. She may have had them, but Politico doesn’t actually say so. I regret the error.

My reason for sharing the link remains valid. Ukraine actively meddled in the 2016 election and supported investigations which led to “Russiagate.” As a result, it is entirely appropriate for the President and our DOJ to seek legal assistance from the current Ukrainian government in looking into the matter.
