Inteerstingly, the editors nod in the direction of identity politics, making the ultimate argument for federalism: “Finally, federalism isn’t just valuable as the “laboratory of democracy” (though that is valuable), it also recognizes the reality that American states have different cultures and different priorities. Drawing legislative districts according to state priorities allows each state to shape its federal delegation the way the people of the state dictate, not according to Washington’s demands.”
Like the cassette recording in Mission Impossible, identity politics inevitably self-destructs.

Nothing is more frightening to “conservatives” than people voting, billionaires and corporations constrained and legislative districts drawn objectively. Almost as frightening would be if the actual sources of money spent on campaigning was a matter of public record.
As for “Drawing legislative districts according to state priorities . . .” that is nothing but a fuzzy way of saying that
“Gerrymandering is a good thing.” And it isn’t. Its only purpose of Gerrymandering is to protect the politicians in office and subvert the principle of the equality of all citizens.

Gerrymandering IS a good thing. It contributes to continuity of governance and requires substantive opposition to the status quo to bring about change. Democrats only don’t like it when it benefits Republicans.
So what else is new?

There you have it – “Gerrymandering IS a good thing.” Another data point suggestive of how far out of the mainstream Trumpism had wandered.
Historically, both parties have used Gerrymandering to keep themselves in power. True dat. But NOW only one party is trying to reform things to make it much more difficult.
