Pilot: House Democrats demand documents from more than 80 people, institutions affiliated with Trump

This WAPO piece at The Pilot makes it sound as if the Congressional investigations are both legitimate and appropriate. They may well be, but left out of the reporting is any good reason for undertaking them.

  1. Congress is certainly entitled to exercise its powers as it is doing here, but the animating motive is unclear. In what sense is “this a critical time for our nation,” as Chairman Nadler asserts?

There has been no obvious obstruction of justice, corruption, or abuse of power, as the president’s critics allege. No one has named specifically anything of the sort, much less stated when and where it supposedly happened. Nor is it obviously reasonable to pursue investigations of such magnitude and consequence based merely on hunches and debatable perceptions.

No, what we have here is an example of media extending a narrative that has no legs of its own. Our system of governance allows for such preoccupations, but that’s about all to be said for them. In an ideal world, our government and press would have better things to do.

    1. Cohen was Trump’s closest attorney for a decade. He testified at a closed hearing in the last day or so.Who knows what was revealed? I don’t.

I would be very concerned if the subpoenas are about nothing, but I suspect there is more to this or we would have certainly heard a lot more from Meadows, Jordan, et.al..

    2. This is a critical time for our nation because . . .

We MAY have a self-serving criminal as our President.
We MAY have a treasonous Russian stooge as our President.
We DO have a sociopath destroying the norms of decency as our President.
We DO have someone seeking to undermine the Constitution as our President.
We DO have a person of low morals and character as our President.
We DO have a pathological liar as our President.
We DO have emotionally immature, unstable and petty person as our President.
We MAY have someone in the grip of dementia as our President.

Any of one these is enough to fairly say that this is a critical time for our nation.

You can fool yourself – if you must – but the evidence of serious and criminal wrongdoing is overwhelming already and we do not yet know the half of it.

I’d love to avoid foolishness, but again: No one has named specifically anything of the sort, much less stated when and where it supposedly happened.

          1. RE: “Fox News is deliberately burying important stories that put Trump in a bad light.”

Stories that put Trump in a bad light are not the same as stories that name his crimes specifically and explain why they are so. But as it happens, I take as much TV news from CNN as from Fox. Its helpful to monitor CNN because it speculates a lot about how bad Trump is, but never proves anything, just as your comments on this topic do.

  2. The fact that Bill Shine is getting paid simultaneously by FOX and the taxpayers as communications director for Trump would be a major scandal for any administration.
