Of course it is racist. Even so, a part of me wants to defend the media prohibition in this instance, if only because denying freedom of association strikes me as a greater sin than denying press coverage.

Put another way, I can’t think of a principled reason to object to black-only meetings or, for that matter, white-only meetings.

The WSJ has an opinion piece today in which an economist claims, “A single-payer health-insurance system can finance good-quality coverage for all U.S. residents while still reducing overall health-care spending by roughly 10%, according to a study I co-authored last November. Something similar developed in the USSR during the period of heavily controlled speech. Wikipedia: Samizdat was a form of dissident activity across the Eastern bloc in which individuals reproduced censored and underground publications by hand and passed the documents from reader to reader. This grassroots practice to evade official Soviet censorship was fraught with danger, as harsh punishments were meted out to people caught possessing or copying censored materials.
