CPAC holds conference in Hungary. Autocracy 101 is favorite lecture perhaps?

https://thehill.com/news/ap/ap-international/conference-of-u-s-conservatives-opens-in-orbans-hungary/

“We have to take the institutions back in Washington and Brussels,” Orban said. “We must find allies in one another and coordinate the movements of our troops.”

Orban packed the courts, appointed election officials, and is pushing for some kind pf ethnic purity. Seems that CPAC wants some tips to pull off the same hat trick. EU has accused Hungary of all kinds of human rights violations So what does CPAC expect for our immigrant nation where near half the population is not White European extract?

I guess if a party can’t offer a platform that people want it should learn how to take power without annoying elections. Maybe the next CPAC can be in Saudi Arabia. MBS knows how to deal with journalists who work for our own media, not just the Mecca Daily Bugle.

  1. “Orban called Hungary ‘the bastion of conservative Christian values in Europe,’ ”

You could not make this stuff up. Well, you could. You might call it 1984.

If one tries to figure out what those “conservative Christian values” are, the word that comes to mind is “conformity.” What is particularly absurd about these people is that they style themselves as champions of “Liberty,” but don’t you dare use that “Liberty” to be different from what we think you should be in ANY way.

  2. I don’t know much about Viktor Orban, but I suspect he is being smeared as an “autocrat” because he won’t take orders from Brussels or Washington, D.C. He seems to be a popular leader in his own country, so I am skeptical of anything critics say about him.

I’m more worried about fascism on the left than I am about fascism on the right.

When the electrodes are clamped to one’s privates, it makes little difference if the “electrician” is a left or a right winger.

A government that has to be periodically re-elected by full, free, transparent and honest elections is better than either dictatorship. Which is why the Big Lie is so popular among the right wing supplicants to MAGA power.

Borrowing from an old Bogart movie, MAGA says “we don’t need no stinkin’ elections”.😇

Hungary holds elections that are transparent to the extent that EU observers and citizen vounteers monitor them. I am unable to find any claim that Orban’s repeated electoral wins are the result of widespread fraud.

Consequently, I’m at a loss to understand why you are promoting a conspiracy theory that American conservatives want to learn how steal elections from Orban.

        1. Conspiracy? No conspiracy, just an observation and curiosity as to why a good old American political action group decided to hold a convention in another country. Sure, Orban is a darling of the right. Carlson spent a week broadcasting from there a while back.

Unless, of course, the next election will be rigged using Hungarian satellites…hmmm.

So, your curiosity justifies accusing CPAC of impropriety? “Seems that CPAC wants some tips to pull off the same hat trick.”

          2. Sure. Aren’t you ever curious about what your leaders and aspiring leaders are doing?

I am. But maybe that is just me.

There was no accusation of impropriety. These jackasses can hold their meetings wherever they choose.

It is worth noting that a leading organization of American “conservatives” choose to associate themselves with the closest thing to a fascist dictator in the EEU. A person who gained his undemocratic power on the basis of Replacement Theory, homophobia and ultra Christian nationalism. Birds of a feather, you know.

Yes, I am. But I try to live by the rule: Assertions require substantiation.

They are the result of him changing the voting rules. It used to be that when no party got a clear majority in a district there was a run-off to determine the winner of the seat. Orban changed that in a very fundamental way that is advantageous for his minority party. Now there is no run-off. The party with a plurality gets the seat. That means many of the seats in their legislature are held by people who would not win in a run-off.

          1. “Are you saying the changes made to Hungary’s constitution are illegal?”

I did not say that, and I do not know. But the fact is that these changes are like Gerrymandering on steroids. They allow his regime to put a fig leaf of democracy on what has devolved into authoritarian one man rule.

Maybe you should find out a little something before offering uninformed opinions?

But, even when you do, you will still admire him. He is a smarter version of Trump who has successfully eliminated democracy in Hungary and seized permanent power on the wings of white supremacy, Replacement Theory, and homophobia. Oh, and he loves his fellow fascist Putin and is doing everything he can to help crush Ukraine. Just your kind of guy!

  3. Yet another attempt at all things perceived bad by left wingers lead back to Trump. You guys are really banking alot on your anti-Trump rhetoric making a difference in midterms. Pelosi with her Jan 7 instructions to the Jan 6 commission ” that “Trump did it” isn’t going to help either. Tick tock tick tock…democrats, you’re fired!!!
