MIT Study: Vaccine Hesitancy Is ‘Highly Informed, Scientifically Literate,’ and ‘Sophisticated’

Source: James Fetzer.

This story has been kicking around for a few days now. I share it to refute the irrational speculation that vaccine hesitancy shows a political bias or that only ignorant people are hesitant to be vaccinated.

I personally believe that the vaccines for Covid-19 have been more beneficial than not, but that isn’t saying much. New and unexpected wrinkles in the Covid-19 vaccination story keep occurring. For example, some pundits have been commenting recently on the observation that populations in Europe with the highest vaccination rates are also experiencing the highest infection case rates, and vice versa (low vaccinations/low case rates).

However that particular observation plays out under scrutiny, politicizing a disease like Covid-19 is clearly a mistake.

  1. It doesn’t say they’re right, ya igit, it simply says the skeptics are using sophisticated methods and visuals to express their point of view.

It doesn’t say they’re wrong, either. It simply says that the vaccine skeptics MIT examined don’t fit the stereotypes applied to them.

  2. WhenI follow a link to a new, to me, site, I will often read some of the comments to get a feel for it.

“ To state the obvious, the vax is a human altering injection that will never be safe. Never. It’s not meant to be. It’s meant to kill us.”

This comment is anti-vax for COVID in a nutshell.

Not that the commenter is necessarily representative of all hesitancy, but since death rates were bandied about by Carlson and friends, it certainly clarifies the issue for some.

The condescension that irks the writer is most certainly evident. Those who get the jab are slaves to the government and those who don’t are the enlightened. Similar to the condescending view that Heartland patriots are the true Americans and the “Coasties” are communists.

If politics always won over science we would still be living in caves dying of “bad air”.

Wait? Are you saying that the USCG is being run by communists? 😇

It’s early. It’s Wednesday. And yesterday was a slow slog of mediocrity. I needed a boost and you provided it. Thanks!

That’s an important point. The commenter is also not representative of the substance of the story.

      1. Comments are generally from the audience the writer is gathering.

But my point was not that this comment was relevant except that it represented an anti-van sentiment that seems popular.

Carlson said the vaccine caused 4000+ deaths, but probably many times that. Not much corroboration with actual cases, just wild speculation.

Even so, that is from 338 million doses.

COVID CAUSED 600,000+ deaths. Many consider that to be a gross undercount. That is from about the same number of people, 338 million.

So the commenter is partially correct. The Republican right wing is trying to kill us.

        1. RE: “Carlson said the vaccine caused 4000+ deaths…”

No. Carlson said there were 4,500 reports of post-vaccination death in the CDC’s VAERS database. That’s a true fact. Currently, there are 11,000 or so similar reports.

RE: “COVID CAUSED 600,000+ deaths. Many consider that to be a gross undercount.”

Many consider that to be a gross overcount, considering the vast majority of deaths occurred among the old.

You should avoid the mistake the MIT study warns against: That of assuming that those you disagree with are inferior.

So who is calling whom inferior?

The big divide is created by the Trump crowd along just those lines.

Let’s see one reputable source who makes that claim. The actuarial data is irrefutable – the excess deaths during this pandemic cannot be explained by the reported number of Covid-19 deaths.

“Carlson said there were 4,500 reports of post-vaccination death in the CDC’s VAERS database. That’s a true fact.”

Carlson left out of his hair-on-fire reporting the fact that these VAERS reports had been followed up and ZERO deaths were CAUSED by the vaccine. Here is the man himself killing people with his fear-mongering. Maybe watch it, and, unless you too are a lying liar, admit that what you see is groteque fear-mongering with distorted and out of context “facts.”

Good for you, but I think you don’t understand your own words. What you wrote suggests that Covid-19 didn’t cause deaths that would have occurred without it.

What I wrote is based on actuarial data, too: the vast majority of Covid deaths have occurred among the old.

RE: “Carlson left out of his hair-on-fire reporting the fact that these VAERS reports had been followed up and ZERO deaths were CAUSED by the vaccine.”

Wrong. You should watch your own videa. Carlson doesn’t say what you think he says.

Yes, and the old are expected to die in certain numbers based on actuarial analysis of past trends. Someone who is 70 has a life expectancy of almost 15 years. Hundreds of thousands more than EXPECTED died. Deaths resulting from the pandemic have been under counted.

Len made a simple true statement to put the scale of this disaster in perspective. Your error-prone quibbling about his true statement is very odd. Part of the ongoing effort to minimize the scale of Trump’s malfeasance? Or are you still rationalizing your Ant-vax selfishness. Mostly old people die – no big deal. Hey, I will bet that YOU are old.

I followed very closely. I know what Tucker said and what its purpose was – to spread fear of the vaccine. Dishonestly. There is a special place in Hell waiting for him.

“Maybe watch it, and, unless you too are a lying liar, admit that what you see is groteque fear-mongering with distorted and out of context “facts.”

So, you will not admit to the obvious fear-mongering that Tucker is playing at?

  3. My take – a lot of people – for some reason – want to behave selfishly and irresponsibly but don’t like being thought of as a selfish and irresponsible. If we are not nicer to them they will hold their breath until they die. Or something like that.

    1. There has NEVER been 100% protection from the virus or any of the variants by any of the vaccines. However, it has been shown that the vaccinated that do contract the virus are not as severely affected as the unvaccinated.

99.5% of recent COVID deaths have been unvaccinated individuals. Makes you wanna go “hmmm”.

  4. The people who are politicizing Covid are clearly Democrats. Even idiots like Biden and Klobucher are attempting to use it to censor speech they don’t agree with and expect social media to do the policing for them. It’s a direct attack on free speech by nannies. First it’s “vaccine misinformation”, next it’s political “misinformation” as long as it’s the opponent saying it.

Then why are Republicans so much less likely than Democrats to get vaccinated?

Silly “nannies” – they don’t want you die of stupidity! Republicans are already the minority party. If they don’t get vaccinated there will be even fewer of them.

Yet it was Lara Trump who said the vaccines were being used to “control people”.

DJT must be very disappointed to find out his daughter-in-law is now a Democrat.

The opinion that it is Democrats only who are politicizing this are the same idiots that believe the sun rises and sets in a pair of pants in Florida,
