Factoid: “the devil to pay” has nothing to do with paying dues or a retribution. Instead, it means “a difficult task”. When ships were wood, the chalking between hull planks had to be replaced. This is called “paying”, not chalking. The ship would be grounded at high tide and as the water dropped, the old paying would be removed and new put in. The planks at the keel were “the devil to pay” since this had to be finished before the rising tide for obvious reasons.
