The idea of packing 10’s of thousands of Republicans from all over the country into a convention hall seems a bit cavalier in the face of a pandemic.
“Plans are being made by many thousands of enthusiastic Republicans, and others, to head to beautiful North Carolina in August. They must be immediately given an answer by the Governor as to whether or not the space will be allowed to be fully occupied. If not, we will be reluctantly forced to find, with all of the jobs and economic development it brings, another Republican National Convention site. This is not something I want to do. Thank you, and I LOVE the people of North Carolina!”
Guarantee? That would be reckless on its face and a sillier demand might be hard to find. Might as well demand sunny weather during that time while the president is at it.
While the cynics might suggest that putting that many Republicans in a Petri dish could be a good test for the status of the pandemic, remember that those same folks will go home and might very well expose Americans of all political persuasions to COVID. After all, that is kind of what happen in the crowded chaos from the sudden, unplanned for, European travel restrictions.
We must be slow learners.

That would be great. Of course vaccines normally take a few weeks to provide immunity.
I think that until we get a viable, effective vaccine, the prudent approach is much better. That means testing, monitoring and locking down hot spots as they occur. Cautious openings are better than either no openings or back to pre-virus behaviors.

Chances are it won’t matter. The CDC’s daily new-case totals have been inching downward ever so slightly since mid-April. Should that trend continue, or deepen through August, it will indicate the emergence of herd immunity.
Put another way, by August a single event like the convention probably won’t affect the national trend, although individuals will still be at risk.
If I were the GOP I’d continue planning the event and watching the numbers. Should evidence of herd immunity not arise, the convention can always be canceled at the last moment.

And that is what should be done. It’ll cost some money. But demanding a guarantee 3 months out makes little sense. Wherever the convention is planned should it move elsewhere will have the same issue.

What do you call 1000 lawyers on the bottom of the ocean? A good start. Aw c’mon, raise your hand if you like “The Hammer” commercials, or how Rudder Mills can adapt so quickly from suing over self-driving cars to suing over COV2 in less time than Trump went from 1 death to “knowing it was a pandemic all along”.
