M: Eight Reasons to End the Lockdowns As Soon as Possible

Six doctors share their thoughts on ending the lockdowns.

I expect Dr.s Fauci and Birx will persist in wanting more medical surveilance of the citizenry, but even that, it seems to me, is losing its aura of urgency.

  1. Fair enough. All factors have to be weighed by decision-makers.

With that said, it is way to early to talk about this thing peaking. We do not have just one pandemic. There are hotspots all over the country at different stages of the process. New York may be nearing a peak. Chicago and other cities are just getting started.

  2. I wonder to what extent the “lockdown” can be ended by a change in policy.

Is anyone going to go sit in a movie theater, or crowded restaurant even if allowed?

Even if we allow non-essential businesses to reopen, do we really want to require people with high risk family members to return to work as a condition of remaining employed? Until reliably effective treatments are available, we still have people who need to be protected.

Unwinding the changes we have made is not going to be simple.

    1. RE: “I wonder to what extent the ‘lockdown’ can be ended by a change in policy.”

      Good question.

I can’t imagine we will ever come to a place where the government scientists will pat us on the head and say, “There, there. It’s all over now.” Instead — and more than usual — we will have to think for ourselves and make good individual decisions.

Personally, I think scientific caution has its place, but we shouln’t let it become a straightjacket. In practice that would mean changing the policy, even knowing the lockdowns might continue by social momentum. In fact, that would be a pretty good test of government intentions.

  3. I can think of one good reason to end the lockdown early. I have always believed that mankind will face an extinction level event. I’m 68 years old, lived through MAD, Global warming is taking too long, and this pandemic may be my best opportunity to be there when it happens.

So, I’m with you. Let’s end the best chance to prevent it.
