So according to the article, the mission of the SNS was changed the next day.
Old pre-Kushner statement:
“Strategic National Stockpile is the nation’s largest supply of life-saving pharmaceuticals and medical supplies for use in a public health emergency severe enough to cause local supplies to run out.”
It continued, “When state, local, tribal, and territorial responders request federal assistance to support their response efforts, the stockpile ensures that the right medicines and supplies get to those who need them most during an emergency.”
Seems reasonable enough. “Our stockpile” means all of us unless Kushner was referring to his family.
New, post-Kushner statement:
“The Strategic National Stockpile’s role is to supplement state and local supplies during public health emergencies. Many states have products stockpiled, as well. The supplies, medicines, and devices for life-saving care contained in the stockpile can be used as a short-term stopgap buffer when the immediate supply of adequate amounts of these materials may not be immediately available.”
As far as I can see, it is still “our” stockpile.
No way to truly defend the indefensible, but a little revisionist history will still impress the gullible with a couple of cute “turns of phrases”.
Unfortunately I cannot help but see that Kushner’s condescending explanation about SNS was a way to tell states to f#@k off. With all due respect of course.

Well, yes, but States should not be drawing on the Federal stockpile while they have their own stockpiles untouched. They are supposed to use theirs first.

Cite? I know Gov Cuomo signed an order to confiscate ventilators from hospitals in the state that don’t have need for them to move them to higher need areas. Shifting things around is fine…until the areas that are CURRENTLY lightly affected find themselves in need. (Deck chairs on the Titanic comes to mind)
And changing the SNS to meet the current message by someone who probably had little knowledge of what that is until 5 minutes before he spoke is indicative of the idiocy of this administration.

I haven’t seen where that has been the issue. States have been scrambling and are still coming up short.
The regime is just backpedaling because they never bothered to check if we had enough PPE’s and ventilators from the time they took the reins. 3 years ago. And it turns out that many ventilators are unusable.
When you are caught with your pants down around your ankles is the wrong time to check if your fly was unzipped.
Azar’s own deputy said a few years back that we needed 12.5 billion masks in SNS. Obama drew down 100 million.
The other 12.4 billion?
And that is what we are stuck with in a serious crisis.

And by the way, about 2,000 of the 10,000 ventilators are unusable due to no maintenance. You see the contract ran out in December and did not get renewed until late February (I believe that was the story I read). And let’s not forget the unusable face masks they sent out.
Now it may not be Trump’s fault that the SNS hasn’t been taken care of properly for the past few years. But if perhaps the 7 P’s had been applied when he took office, this would not be the issue it is now.

I am one of those people most likely to die of a shortage of ventilators, but this is a manufactured “gotcha.”
The hard truth is that you can’t be fully prepared for everything.
How many fallout shelters do we have? DO we have enough food stored to get our population through a 3 year winter resulting from an asteroid strike or an eruption of the Yellowstone Super volcano? How about Iodine pills to cover us in the case of multiple dirty bombs by terrorists?
There are lots of potential catastrophes we aren’t fully prepared for, and really can’t be and have a welfare state at the same time.
So, choose 1,
Medicaid or a ventilator stockpile adequate for a novel respiratory virus.
We can’t afford both. We have increased spending on entitlements to the point that they have driven other things out of the budget.
Give up paying people’s way for them for day to day needs and we can afford to prepare for emergencies like this, but we can’t have both.

Asteroid were not being warned about for years nor was that passed on by the Obama administration.
The cost of checking our stockpile, repairing, adding and making sure it was at least up to this administrations own assessments is a rounding error on a multi-trillion dollar budget.
Time? Azar knew the problem or he would not have brought it up. An XO by Trump to make things right he could have signed in his way to Mar a Lago.
Stop blaming Medicaid. If we didn’t have so many poor people and a job market where almost 1/2 the jobs pay less than $15/hour they might afford their own healthcare.
The response from this regime has been criminal. And fed by its own propaganda machine that is now working OT to revise history it is a disgrace to call themselves Americans.

You are correct that we cannot be prepared for everything bad that might happen but when this is over we need to reassess what we prepare for. A small fraction of the INCREASES to our already bloated military budget that protects us from virtually non-existent threats would have been far more than enough to prepare for this pandemic with a stockpile of first class and functioning equipment and PPEs.
Medicaid IS indeed a significant and growing government expenditure. It is only going to get much bigger in the building recession/depression. We should cancel it and apply all that money to Medicare-for-all.

If you are referring to my description of Trump above, that is not an insult. It is the simple truth of the matter. And sadly, we both know it to be true but only one of us pretends that it is not.
And, BTW, the piece I linked to about D-K and Trump was put together with, you know, evidence. D-K syndrome is a real thing and Trump displays it just about every day on some subject or other.

Reality check – Ventilators are a last ditch effort that do not save the life of the patient most of the time. Far more important are the relatively low tech forms of PPE.
