It’s true. What we see with our own lyin’ eyes does deceive.
We don’t do well with our normal senses for the very large (universe), the very small (molecular), the very fast (light) and the very slow (canyon formation).
But our brain devises clever ways to overcome those frailties.

I think this was LONG known before 1978. NRL scientists studied pigeons in WWII and determined the head movement was to better detect relative motion around them.
BTW, they did this in an attempt to develop a guided missile. The pigeon was the “low cost guidance and control unit”. The bird was trained to tap on a glass quadrant in which a target was located.
I don’t think it worked, but it was a great idea except too many pigeons and not enough targets.
