FEMA denies Ocracoke individual assistance for Hurricane Dorian damage, leaving locals “stunned”

Can someone clarify what FEMA’s role would/should be in this situation? Are the homeowners not covered by insurance?

Not to sound cold, but maybe—eventually—people will learn not to live in places like Ocracoke.

  1. Aside from the infamous “FEMA trailers,” it appears what the residents applied for was grants to help with emergency repairs, temporary housing, etc. to hold them over while their insurance companies try to figure out how to deny their claims.
