Which moral code?

Apparently his “moral and religious code” didn’t include treating others as you wish to be treated. I feel the dreaded “H” word coming on…

And exactly where does it say that using the pronoun of an individual’s choice goes against anyone’s moral code? Apparently, acknowledging someone for who they are is anti-whatever religion this “educator” adheres to.

  1. Sitting in judgement of other people’s morality doesn’t strike me as a productive way to approach the story of this lawsuit.

The article doesn’t tell us much, but there appears to be a legitimate conflict of 1st Amendment rights in the case: The student wants to teacher to speak in a certain way and the teacher doesn’t want to speak that way.

I’d say the student’s 1st Amendment rights are inferior to the teacher’s since enforcing them would corrupt the principle of free speech itself. The 1st Amendment doesn’t give anyone the right to compel others to speak against their will.

The same principle would extend to the school, except that the school is under no obligation to retain a teach whose performance violates school policy.

If the only reason the school terminated the teacher is his refusal to comply with their unreasonable infringement of his 1st Amendment rights, then the school should compensate the teacher for its actions.

Doesn’t matter. His religious beliefs themselves are not the subject of the litigation. His 1st Amendment rights are.

      1. The fact that you believe the student’s rights are inferior to those of the teacher tells me all I need to know about your feelings on this.

If an individual is offended by the speech of another, especially after discussing it, and the teacher agreed to using the student’s NAME of choice, but not the requested pronoun, it is the teacher who is the offender here. And his statement that it is because of his religious and moral code that he won’t adhere to the request of the student, makes his beliefs part of the litigation, contrary to what you believe. (Which is also part of the 1st Amendment.)

This is not a cake baker or photographer who refuses to provide services to a same sex marriage. It is a teacher, who apparently doesn’t quite understand the responsibilities of a teacher. A safe learning environment comes to mind.

      2. RE: “it is the teacher who is the offender here.”

No doubt, but the teacher has a 1st Amendement right to be offensive in this particular way. More importantly, the student has no 1st Amendement right to compel the teacher to be inoffensive.

Are you willing to gut the 1st Amendment in order to make your version of morality the law of the land?

          1. At least I have a sense of morality. Yours is questionable at best. If one of your children were being treated unfairly in school by a teacher who refused to provide a safe learning environment, you would be screaming to the heavens. But because the student in question happens to be a transitioning T-student, you have no feelings for her.

As I said, I know all I need to about your feelings on this and the why behind it. Your own words betray that.

  2. It’s not morality; it’s ignorant bullying.

He insulted the kid and continued to do so. What if he called a big girl a “he”? Or an effeminate boy a “she”? He flatly denied this kid common respect.
