One short letter, one big lie and an amazing memory lapse

The LTE is caught up in Trump mendacity.

TPP was in the works from 2008 to 2016 ending with 12 signatories including our biggest trading partners, Canada and Mexico. China was excluded. Another half dozen or so, including South Korea, India and Indonesia were in the wings for later membership. The pressure on China would have been a lot stronger than just the US. Our obvious vulnerability in agriculture as well as long standing supply lines in China made going alone more painful And, so far, ineffective after 1 1/2 years. Not to mention the taxpayers are having to cough up tens of billions to support farmers. Trump needs those votes, after all.

Trump is lining up scapegoats: “whiney” farmers, mismanaged businesses, The Fed Chairman’s, the Democrats, the media, my dog Max… Absent from that list, of course, is Trump himself. Mr. “trade wars are easy to win” which is a stupid slap in the face of Xi, leader of one of the most powerful nations in the world.

As for the memory lapse, a friendly reminder to the LTE author of the lofty goals of the GOP after the 2010 midterms:

“Here’s John Boehner, the likely speaker if Republicans take the House, offering his plans for Obama’s agenda: “We’re going to do everything — and I mean everything we can do — to kill it, stop it, slow it down, whatever we can.”

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell summed up his plan to National Journal: “The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president.”

How easily and conveniently the right wing bubble wrapped followers seem to forget the flagrant attempts to destroy our lest President.

IMHO

  1. I not sure if “righteous ignorance” is a thing, but that’s what jumped into my mind when I read this.

The “plan” of a seven year old (insult to them, I know) and blaming EVERYONE in sight for the problems HE is causing.

  2. The TTP was nothing more than a big ‘Could have’

The reality is that none of our partners showed any signs of being ready to stand with us in a confrontation with China, either individually or through the TTP. On the contrary, all were quite ready to make a separate peace with China against us.

All that would have brought is another decade of whining about China without doing anything.

    1. How would we know? The nations were in the process of ratifying, Japan and New Zealand had already done so. With the US in the mix, I would be more that willing to bet that the muscle would have been enough to extract some fairer trade policies.

Trump just handed Xi a huge advantage by going from a multi-front “war” to a single one.

Multilateral trade agreements are complex and require compromises along with careful negotiations to take into consideration that the leaders all have political constituents with a broad range of interests to protect.

    2. Doing “something” is something most agree on. This ill thought-out attempt to bludgeon them into corporation is just economically irresponsible and stupid.

The TPP used as a basis for cooperation by those that know how to think strategically could, and I believe would have been a win/win for “our” side.

“All are quite ready” because we elected an child-like moron for President that is pushing them away…

    3. You can support any opinion with made up facts. For example this doozy . . .

“The reality is that none of our partners showed any signs of being ready to stand with us in a confrontation with China, either individually or through the TTP. On the contrary, all were quite ready to make a separate peace with China against us.”

Agreeing to join the TPP which purposefully EXCLUDED China is clearly such a sign of being ready. As for that “separate peace with China,” if you have any evidence of that it would likely have followed their realization that Trump is withdrawing the United States from any kind of leadership role in global affairs and doing his best to undermine the dollar as the preferred reserve currency of central banks.
