Wealth is power. Always has been and to the degree our political systems is driven by money, it seems it always will be.
Estate taxes of one form or another have been around for centuries. Our own version was recently changed in the last decades so that it only affects less than 1% of our population. But it was enacted over a century ago in reaction to the rise of a permanent oligarchy among descendants of the industrial era magnates.
That being said, the Koch empire, both inherited and expanded, exerted incredible influence only possible through great wealth and legal changes that magnified the power of money in politics.
What is ironic is that all the conservative positions of opposition to universal, affordable healthcare and higher education, unions, minimum wages, SS, are so well funded by inherited wealth in many cases.
