“Further legislation on all levels is necessary to bring about a more equitable society with opportunity for all toward a more perfect union.

“We need better tools to fight the scourge and resurgence of all forms of hatred, bigotry and discrimination. Democracies are at risk of backsliding, as was the case in Germany, and require eternal vigilance.”

  1. No thanks, Rabbi. The tools we have are more than adequate. The museums you mention are among them. So are the archives of history. So is our Bill of Rights.

If none can feel “the overcoming sense of uncontrollable loss” you want for us, then we are already lost.

But I think, Tikkun Olam, few are truly lost in such a way. To idealize the past is a deep mistake, made deeper by the assumption it inspires that we can turn a bad to good by law. Surely, Rabbi, it is better to embrace in living hearts the good we already can find there.
