The item makes a fair point: The Constitution was never meant to limit government power in the sense of limiting government’s material size or reach. It was meant to allow for big and influential government, if such came to be, commensurate with the principles of wise governance.
In effect, the objective was to create a federal institution capable of growth, but most likely to function and operate as would Plato’s idealistic philosopher king.
But if this objective has been fetishized into something else, so has the alternative objective of converting the republic into a collectivist empire.
Hence the great ideological conflict of our time between republicans (small “r”) and socialists. Our puzzle is that too many of our aristocrats and intellectuals reject republicanism, if they even understand it.
