The new, improved, TLP.

No longer the Party of Principle

The Tidewater Libertarian Party is now The Tidewater Liberty Partners, a non-partisan, Liberty advocacy group dedicated to fighting government overreach and overspending.

This has been a hard decision for me as well as for others. I gave the Libertarian Party 22 years as a candidate, advocate and author. When such ties must be severed, it is important to be transparent about the cause. As explained above, the Libertarian Party of VA conspired with a handful of malcontents who disagreed with how the TLP worked for Liberty. They do not even dispute that the TLP has been effective, that would be impossible. The TLP has had more successes than the entire Libertarian Party of Virginia, combined.

But we allowed non-libertarians running for office, or their representatives, 2 minutes to speak at our meetings during election seasons. That included representatives of the Trump campaign, and that the purists could not allow.

Our policy of allowing candidates a forum is much like farming oysters, you know most of them aren’t going to make it. But some do, and they know who was there for them when they started.

Among those who took advantage of that policy include 2 VA governors, a Commonwealth Attorney, 2 Congresswomen, a score of Delegates and State Senators, and a Homeland Security Director. They aren’t Libertarians, but they will pick up the phone when we call. We would not have Eminent Domain Reform in VA absent those relationships we built. And you can’t wait to build them after they make it big, you must make those connections with a lot of oysters when they need you.

The Libertarian Party of Hampton Roads(if it still exists) is on no way the successor of the Tidewater Libertarian Party and if they make any claims to being so, will be in violation of the court order separating the TLP from the Libertarian Party.  They are a handful of losers who, like so much of the rest of the current Libertarian Party, are content to sit alone accomplishing nothing and sniping at those who do, waiting for the day the country is lost to tyranny so they can say “We told you so.”

Maybe someday the Libertarian Party will rise again, but for now it must wither and die. And it is doing a fantastic job of it.

  1. Can’t say I understand the issues very well, but I do think that “Tidewater Liberty” as a phrase is good branding. Here is why: People don’t have to think before claiming to want liberty; they might have to think before claiming to want libertarianism.

So, in an important way your new identity simplifies your messaged purpose. Well done!

Apart from that I think TLP’s philosophy of developing political alliances across ideological boundaries is eminently practical. This way of thinking and operating is the American Way, and I wish your organization revitalized success.
