So, a desperate family is “caught.” They are here illegally which is a civil offense and not a crime. After due process of law they are subject to deportation. But, they ask for asylum which under our law they are entitled to do. A court date is scheduled – according to this article as many as five years in the future because we short-change these courts. If they are not to be released what does that mean – a family held in a prison for five years? Illegal and expensive. Okay, take them to the border and force them out. At gunpoint? They will just stay away, right?
The Obama administration achieved 99% compliance with court dates with a program of aid and counselling for such families but Trump killed that program because, you know, desperate immigrants are “animals.”
