The future is impossible to predict, but I expect we’re about to witness a repeat of the Kavanaugh hearings on steroids, replete with demented and demonic disruptions in the chambers where our governance is otherwise meant to be done. One difference: The target in chief will be gadding about the country hosting massive rallies, or forums, where he can dispute the proceedings in any terms he wishes.

The rule of law and our system of checks and balances is at stake.

I thought so too, until pretty recently. There is value in airing all the administration’s dirty laundry before an election, but if that is the strategy, the timing is questionable.
It could be that she wants to get all of the backlash against the Bidens’ Ukrainian adventures out of the way before the general. If this is the case, the timing makes more sense. Unless they feel they have enough to dominate the news for an entire year, in which case, Jah help us.

Or it could be that she, and the other Dems, feel it is the correct action to take given the transgressions involved, regardless of timing or political considerations.

This is not the only place where this reporting has been seen. Considering that Biden was not the only proponent for the firing of the prosecutor, but the majority of the Western World’s leaders felt the same way. And none of it had anything to do with Hunter.

Not really; corporate Board Members in Fortune 500 Companies (often with few qualifications) receive hundreds of thousands of dollars routinely.
Sometimes they’re paid solely for their name recognition.

You may well be correct that beginning a formal process of impeachment will backfire politically on the Democrats but it is worth noting that the seven freshmen Congressmen who joined the impeachment caucus with a WAPO Op Ed came from very competitive districts where Trump did well. Maybe they are willing to throw themselves on their swords to do what is right, but more likely they sense that FINALLY Trump has gone too far for their constituents to stomach any longer.
With that said, the larger issue is not the political cost of impeachment but the continuing damage to our democracy without it. Trump has shown again and again in countless ways that he is EXACTLY what the founders had in mind when they created this method to deal with an unsuitable President. It may be the greatest political peril will be to the Republicans if they continue their attempts to cover for this jerk.

Hmmm, didn’t know the State Department had investigative powers, nor that they could legally enlist civilians to commit criminal acts. Giuliani is a complete whack-job. Like Carter Page, he comes with a build-in insanity defense.
When I first began investing I bought stock in a small company. Three months later the CEO, who held 75% of the shares, sold 10% of his stake to a mutual fund. The stock tumbled. I was shocked. I would have thought this was a good thing, and called my broker who agreed with me and added, “There are many reasons to sell, but only one to buy.” I bought more. In six months it finished up 20%.
The Democrats will eventually impeach. They have only one reason to impeach — the criminality of Trump. There really is no other upside.
The Senate will overrule, too many downsides, the least of which is Pence. They have only reason to sustain, morality and that’s not a reason to the GOP anymore.
