Ms. Dougherty seems to be in a cranky mood, but I don’t blame her. Dr. Fauci increasingly looks like an oxymoron; a befuddled KGB agent.

Still, the commentary is an opportunity to discuss the new and improved Covid-19 variant. I am particularly intrigued by the possibility — mentioned by many, including Ms. Dougherty — that Omicron might be both mild and Covid enough to safely confer natural immunity on those who remain hesitant about vaccination. There’s probably some logical flaw in the notion.

However that might be, early reporting suggests that Omicron is insufficiently threatening to justify a return to lockdowns, mask mandates, or health passports. The courts seem to be dismissing vaccine mandates fairly handily, as they should.

    So, in the Lala land of the modern “conservative” the government can force you to bear a child but cannot force you to wear a mask in the middle of a deadly pandemic. You cannot make this stuff up either.

      Actually, the government can only force a woman to bear a child, since a man can’t. But since you bring it up, “My body, my choice” should apply to vaccines.

        There is a great deal of symmetry there. The difference is, nevertheless, obvious. Being vaccinated is trivial compared to pregnancy and childbirth. Forcing women to continue unwanted pregnancies will not stop a pandemic. Forcing vaccinations would stop a pandemic. See the difference?

            Really, really dopey. For every person who has died from a vaccination there are countless thousands of women who have died giving birth. In 2020 approximately 300,000 women died in childbearing. Deaths CAUSED by Covid vaccinations are almost non-existent.

          4. My conscience does not need engaging about virtually non-existent vaccination deaths in a context where vaccination is saving millions of people from death and illness. Duh!

            My initial statement – “Being vaccinated is trivial compared to pregnancy and childbirth” – was true. Only a doctrinaire antivaxxer would dispute it.

    The science has proven that both the natural immunity of having had COVID AND receiving a vaccine improves one’s chances of surviving an infection. Doctors have been saying that form the earliest points of time post-vaccine availability.

    The logical flaw is, Ms. Daugherty and the others saying it is a possibility, they aren’t, for the most part, professional scientists. People who turn to the likes of Joe Rogan for medical and scientific advice, I’m talking to YOU Aaron Rodgers and Dana White (CEO of UFC), show a certain level of ignorance that makes this to be true:

  3. I don’t think we know enough yet to determine if Omicron is milder in the at-risk population. It may well be mild for young people but still lethal to old and infirm.

    We also do not yet know if it will evade current vaccines. But you can bet Moderna and Pfizer already have a prototype vaccine updated accordingly and it will be the FDA that delays it, not Pharma.

    The real game changer will be Plaxovid, if the FDA will get its act together and get it approved.

        That describes my objection pretty well. A good example of government overreach is that vaccine effectiveness for Omicron is a “known unknown,” but Dr. Fauci used Omicron to promote vaccination. The overreach consists of ignoring factual subtleties and talking down to the public.

        There is no grand plot to control you except by social media and commerce, both of which are private market entities. And there goal is to get you to spend money.

        People, like Dr. Fauci and many, many others, are working hard to get us through a pandemic against a tide of resistance by loonies and their enabling politicians. Death threats are the bonus for trying to do that.

        Yes, making policies for 1/3 billion people is not always perfect. But attributing “control” as in a “1984” style to everything from face masks, vaccines, Gates, chips in shots, satellites, is childish, crazy and dangerous.

        That is also part of the Big Lie, which is an attempt, successful I might add, to control a sizable minority of Americans who believe that crap.

            The last president tried to squelch info on the virus early on because he thought we were to “delicate” to hear the truth. We might panic.

            Instead we died by the 100’s of thousands.

            I want to know about as much information as I can get on this pandemic. If you don’t feel people can handle it, then who is the elitist?

          Biden’s OHSA mandate was clearly unconstitutional, and they knew it, they just thought they’d get away with it.

          As bad as COVID is, it is not worse than a government which will not be restrained by the rule of Law.

          2. Biden tried to use the emergency provision intended for a specific problem in a single industry to regulate every company under OSHA authority, and then gave 4 months for it to take effect.

            Clearly not the intent of Congress, or any of the judges who have ruled on it.

          3. Half the stuff presidents try are subject to judicial review. Did Biden call the judges names or try to attack the courthouse with his gangs when the court ruled against his efforts? The Rule of Law survives quite well with the current administration.

            No, but the last president did denigrate any judge or court that disagreed with him. And he certainly did not believe in the Rule of Law.

      4. I have yet to hear anyone hype the new variant as an emergency. On the contrary, notifying the public of the existence of it and stating that vaccines can HELP prevent serious illness is actually a RESPONSIBLE action. Unlike the previous administration who downplayed the existence, lied about the science (or ignored it), and lied about a certain individual having the virus prior to the debate.

        Funny how Meadows put it in his book, his former boss said it was “fake news” and then, lo and behold, Meadows said it was “fake news”. I guess his book should be moved to the Fiction section of the library.

            Funny, that is the gist of the Texas “vigilante” abortion law. Passing a law that is enforced by self-appointed citizens.

            In this case, the companies must enforce vaccination, the incentive is avoiding fines. Whereas with the Texas abortion law the incentive is the state enforcing fines to be collected by the soil-appointed arbiters of “justice”.

            Yes, there are minor differences, but the similarities are glaring.

            What is good for the goose…

            PS: the new virus, omicron, is evidently incentive for those wavering folks to get vaccinated. What man can’t do, the natural world has the last word.

          2. The two things are totally unrelated. And you are presuming I approve of the Texas law.

            But Texas doing something does not justify the Feds doing something else.

            And I doubt Omicron is going to convince anybody to get vaccinated. First, we do not at this time have any evidence that the vaccines are effective against it. Further, the anti-vaxxers are citing it as proof that vaccines don’t work.

            What we better do is get Plaxovid into the hands of primary care doctors. It is as effective for high risk patients as the best vaccines were against the original virus, 89% prevention of hospitalization and 100% effective in preventing among high risk patients when given on the first 3 days.

            And mutations in the spike protein do not diminish its effectiveness.

            But I also had to take, without actual consent, an anthrax vaccine or lose my position.

            The “my body, my choice”, mantra that women have been screaming for decades has been coopetd by anti-vax dolts. And may of them do not feel the same when when it comes to a woman’s autonomy to do with her body what SHE chooses.

            How about GOV DeSantis offering unemployment benefits to those who choose to give up their positions for not following a condition of employment set by their employers? Now all of a sudden the same unemployment benefits that you touted as allowing people to not have to work are being offered to those who choose to be potential spreaders of disease. Public health be damned because the Constitution is interpreted to says so?

          4. Again, my disapproval of vaccine mandates is not an endorsement of any assistance DeSantis offers to those who object. It’s about the Rule of Law.

            I am a big supporter of vaccination, and antivirals as well, but the Constitution is what it is and so is the OSHA law. Pretending they are otherwise in order to deprive people of their right to make bad choices is wrong, no matter the intentions, or even the results.

            We are a nation of the Rule of Law, not the expediency of the moment.
