Signing a book he did not author is a bit odd. But even more so is that “Green Eggs and Ham” is not one of the books the Seuss Foundation decided to not reprint and Cruz is selling it as a “collector’s item”. Was the ex-president right about “lyin’ Ted”? Can’t make this stuff up. No wonder the GOP is trying so hard to rig elections in their favor.

It is only odd if you’ve forgotten — or didn’t notice the fact in the HuffPo piece — that Cruz famously read Green Eggs and Ham out loud in the Senate during a filibuster of the Affordable Care Act.

I saw that. Does reading a book out loud give me signing and selling privileges?
Besides, if the point is rarity due to “cancel culture”, then picking a non-issue book is a bit misleading.
But, yeah, in the grand scheme of things, this is just another bit of conservative grievance tragicomedy.

You think so? His customers thought Pence could decide who won the election rather than the voters. They might conclude that the book was banned, which it wasn’t. Nor were any of Seuss’ books banned.

Not banned, but no longer published and not available on Ebay.
I don’t argue that the four Suess books pulled from publication are offensive by today’s standards, but they weren’t written today.
Robert Ruark’s SOMETHING OF VALUE and UHURU would certainly seem offensive today, but they are of great literary value, touching on the issues of colonialism, the Mow mow insurrection and Female Genital Mutilation decades ahead of public awareness. (Yes, the British were forced out of Kenya because they prohibited FMG)
Banning controversial books because they offend current sensibilities robs us of historical perspective.

They were not banned. The owners decided that the illustrations were not what they wanted for the legacy of the author since they were stereotypical and insulting.
Their property, their choice.
Perhaps an argument could be made that as the books were read, parents could invoke a teachable moment. That our current racial issues have a long and difficult history might not be a bad idea.

An appropriate Foreword could be added to the books to that effect pointing out the differing standards of the times, but burying the books is counterproductive.
My 30 year old copy of SOMETHING OF VALUE has such a Foreword regarding the use of the word “Wog” which was what the British called everyone East of Italy in the 50s.

Maybe you should check your history of which end of the political spectrum has been censoring books for decades. Here is a hint – it is not the left end of the spectrum. And while racist garbage – such as the Dr. Seuss books in question – receive disapproval from the left it, is actual literary classics that “the right” has removed from schools, stores and libraries.
Included in the “conservative” censorship hall of shame are . . .

I miss Molly Ivins. She pulled back the curtain in Texas politics.
I guess secession is on the back burner until the feds pony up for the last disaster. Texas has more gas than Goya Foods bean tasters and it could not keep the power on or the water flowing.
