Of course it is racist. Even so, a part of me wants to defend the media prohibition in this instance, if only because denying freedom of association strikes me as a greater sin than denying press coverage.
Put another way, I can’t think of a principled reason to object to black-only meetings or, for that matter, white-only meetings.

He is a white Georgia mayor, not a black one.
I read the link and the AP story and am very confused as to why he was referred to as black.

White only, or black only, meetings of private groups, though suspect, are protected under freedom of association as you point out, however racially exclusive meetings by public officials are not.
